World Textile Day 2011

World Textile Day Wales - 2011

An Exhibition of Print, Pattern and Design

This year's theme was 'print, pattern and design' and visitors enjoyed a tantalising exhibition of patterned textiles and artefacts from around the world.

In the morning lecture Diane Gaffney and Magie Relph discussed the relationship between traditional Javanese batik and the African wax print fabrics that were developed in Europe during the Industrial Revolution. These prints still dominate the fabric markets of West Africa, as you can discover in Magie's acclaimed book African Wax Print: A Textile Journey.

In the afternoon session Jim Gaffney and Magie Relph put on a fascinating demonstration of Javanese and African printing techniques.

Thank you to everyone who made the day so enjoyable: Doreen, Jeff and the team from the Quilt Associaton and, of course, our enthusiastic visitors!
